How to Tour the Norwegian Fjords

The Norwegian fjords, with their majestic mountains rising out of deep water, are true wonders of nature. The fjords were created when moving glaciers carved out deep inlets in the mountains that were then filled with ocean water as the glaciers retreated. Visitors from around the world come to see the fjords that make up much of Norway's coastline.

Visit the region of Norway's fjords that best suits your preferences and interests. The fjords of Norway are located on the west coast, and though they seem to occupy a relatively small amount of land, the numerous mountains and waterways mean that you cannot simply travel along the entire coastline. There are four regions: Rogaland, Hordaland, Sogn og Fjordane and Møre og Romsdal. Rogaland, where fjords are rugged and high, is home to the famous Lysfjord and the distinctive Pulpit Rock and is a favorite among adventure sports enthusiasts. Hordaland contains the vast Hardangerfjord as well as the cultural city of Bergen and Troldhaugen, the home of famed composer Edvard Grieg. Sogn og Fjordane holds Norway's longest fjord. The mountains drop down dramatically into the water, and many small towns add a unique charm to this area. Møre og Romsdal is the most remote of the fjord regions and the most untouched. Numerous islands line the coast and can be explored by boat.

Rent a car if you prefer to stick to your own schedule. When driving independently, you will need to research your route completely, keeping in mind factors like ferry schedules and difficult mountain roads. Join a bus tour if you want the convenience of allowing a company to handle the details for you. Bus tours offer informational commentary and stops at shopping locations. Cruise the fjords with a boat tour for a very different view of nature. You can arrange boat tours of a specific fjord or go on a longer cruise that visits a number of fjords. Ride from destination to destination on the railway to cut travel times down and see the countryside. Combine two or more methods of touring the fjords to enjoy everything they have to offer.

    • 3

Travel with a touring company that suits the type of travel you prefer, using a la carte tours or complete touring packages. Research the tours available, taking into consideration the services offered, the price and the length of the tour. Even if you are not interested in booking a full two-week tour with a daily itinerary, you may enjoy a self-drive tour that offers fjord cruises and mountain walks at a number of destinations.

Bring out the best in your stay in the fjords by finding accommodations with great views and services that highlight the region you are in. Accommodations in the fjords range from youth hostels and campsites to hotel chains and resorts. In Rogaland, find lots to do at activity-based hotels. In Hordaland, enjoy a stay at a historic location. In Sogn og Fjordane, discover the quiet life with a farm stay. In Møre og Romsdal, get in touch with nature by roughing it at a campsite.
