How to Make Co2 Injectors for House Plants

CO2 is carbon dioxide. It is a prime chemical that plants use to make their food in addition to sunlight and water. Making an injector involves creating a tool to inject this chemical into your plant's environment. Doing so can increase the amount of materials your plant has at its disposal, enrich the soil of your plant, and even prolong your plant's life. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 2 liter plastic bottle
  • Thin plastic tube
  • Silicone sealant
  • 1 tsp. of yeast
  • 2 to 3 cups of sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. of baking soda
  • 1-1/2 liters of water (filtered and without chlorine)

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a small hole in the lid of the two liter bottle just big enough for the small tube to fit in it. Slide the tube down into the hole until it is about 3 cm below the cap. Finally, seal the hole with your silicone sealant to make the entire device air tight.

    • 2

Mix the yeast, baking soda, and sugar into the water and dissolve all the materials well. Once dissolved and thoroughly mixed, pour your solution into the bottle and seal the cap on tight.

    • 3

Bury the end of the plastic tube into the soil of your house plant and keep the two liter bottle level and sideways so the liquid contents don't empty into the soil. Since the bottle is airtight, the yeast will resort to anaerobic reactions and begin to produce carbon dioxide. With nowhere to go except out the tube, the carbon dioxide will empty into the soil and eventually reach the plant.

Tips & Warnings

  • If necessary you may prop the two liter bottle so it stays level. This injector should produce CO2 for about two weeks, so after that prepare a fresh injector, and replace the old one.

  • This is not a solution to save a withering plant. If your plant is withering, increase the amount of sunlight it receives, add fertilizer, or monitor its water consumption more regularly, but CO2 will not save a withering or dead plant. What the CO2 will do, is enrich an already healthy plant by speeding growth and increasing health and longevity.
