How to Use the Apple iTouch for a TV Remote Control

The Apple iPod touch allows for third-party developers to create applications to extend the capabilities of the device far beyond just a media player. In addition, Apple has added a platform that developers can build peripherals on to work with these devices. This is what makes it possible for the iPod touch to now be used as a universal remote for your television, as it adds the wireless technology needed by the TV that the iPod does not support by default.

Instructions

  1. Getting Started

    • 1

Purchase the RedEye hardware from ThinkFlood's website. Upon receipt of the hardware, set it up as the instructions call for. Note that RedEye requires an electrical power source in order to operate.

    • 2

Download the RedEye application from the iTunes App Store and install it to your phone. Run the application.

    • 3

Go to "Rooms Setup," select the default room and tap on "Networking." Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your wireless network with RedEye. Be sure to have your network password if it is a secured network.

    • 4

Tap on the "Setup" tab on the lower right-hand corner of the screen. Look for the "Add a Device" option and tap it. When this appears, tap on "Manufacturer" and find your television's manufacturer from the list, tap your selection, then tap "Save."

    • 5

Tap "Device Type" and select "Television" from the options available. Tap the line with the text "Display Name" and give this device a unique name. This will help you find the device throughout the RedEye application.

    • 6

Tap "Model Name" and enter a model number if you have one. This may help in locating a working infrared profile for your television faster than had you not entered this information. It is not required, however.

    • 7

Allow RedEye to connect to the Internet and download possible code matches. Follow the onscreen instructions to search through the codes to find the best possible match. When you find a code that works, setup has been successful. When done, hit the "Save" button and the iPod Touch should now act as a remote for your television.

Tips & Warnings

  • This tutorial is only a basic example of how to set up a television with the RedEye hardware. RedEye can control many other devices: Consult the user manual for more information.

  • While the application in iTunes is free, the hardware that allows the iPod to work as a TV remote costs $188. Since there is no infrared transmitting port on the iPhone, use without specialized hardware is not possible.
