How to Find a Good Violin Case

If you are an experienced violinist, you know choosing the perfect case is one of the integral parts of caring for your expensive instrument. Even if you are a novice, you want the right case to keep your new violin safe. There are several elements to violin cases that affect their quality and their performance. Do your homework thoroughly before you go the expense of purchasing a new violin case for your instrument.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide how much you want to spend before you start shopping for a violin case. There are many excellent cases in all price ranges.

    • 2

Consider your needs. Will you be carrying the instrument everywhere? Look for a lightweight case with shoulder straps. Is there a chance you'll be taking your instrument traveling with you? You'll need a sturdy hard-shell case. If you expect to send your violin as checked luggage on an airplane, purchase a case that is specifically designed for airplane travel. Other options to consider include music pockets, accessory storage and bow storage.

    • 3

Shop with reputable dealers. Some case companies may claim to sell durable cases, but in reality, they don't hold up to the wear and tear of daily life. Get recommendations from teachers, recognized string stores (not general music stores) and other musician friends.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose your violin case according to your needs--not your neighbor's needs or even your teacher's needs. Each case choice should be as individual as the person who is buying it.

  • Don't waste money on features you don't need. Things like built-in hygrometers or airplane-safe outer shells aren't worth it if you never plan on using them. On the other hand, don't skimp on the elements that you do need. The safety of your instrument is important.
