How to Transfer Email From Outlook Express to Windows Mail

Windows Mail is a free newsgroup and email client that is the successor to Outlook Express and is included with the Windows Vista operating system. If you are upgrading your computer or purchasing a new PC, you don't have to lose all of your saved email messages. You can export your messages from Outlook Express and migrate them into Windows Mail.

Instructions

      Open Outlook Express. Click "Tools" and select "Options" from the menu that appears. In the Options dialog box, click "Maintenance" to open the Maintenance tab.

      Click "Store Folder" to see the location where your email messages are stored. Navigate to that folder on your computer and close Outlook Express.

      Click "Edit" and "Select All" once you have opened your Store Folder. Press "CTRL" and "C" to copy all of the files in that folder.

      Open the folder where you want to place your email files. This should not be located within your Outlook Express directory. If you need to create a new folder, right-click and select "New" and "Folder."

      Press "CTRL" and "V" to paste the files into the new folder. If you are transferring your files to a new computer, you will need to copy this folder to a flash drive or disc.

      Open Windows Mail.

      Click "File" and select "Import." Click "Messages" and select "Microsoft Outlook Express 6." Click "Next."

      Select "Import Mail From an OE6 Store Directory" and click "OK." Browse to the directory where you saved your Outlook Express Store Folder files and click "Next."

      Select the folders that you would like to import or click the radio button next to "All Folders" to import all of your messages. Click "Next" then click "Finish" to complete the process of transferring your emails to Windows Mail.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your imported messages will automatically be filed in Windows Mail in the Imported folder. You can drag and drop the messages into other folders to organize them however you wish.
