How to Make Goopy Crafts

Goopy crafts are as fun to make as they are to play with, and you can typically find the simple ingredients around the kitchen without having to buy anything extra. Goop is an alternative to play dough, and having the ability to personalize the colors by adding your own food coloring gives you total creative freedom. Making and playing with goop also promotes sensory growth and helps develop fine motor skills.

  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Mixing bowl
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Cookie sheet
  • Cookie cutters
  • Plastic knives

Instructions

    • 1

Add food coloring (if desired) to water. Mix the colored water with the cornstarch in a medium sized mixing bowl. Mix the goop up until you reach the desired consistency. Add more water a teaspoon at a time until the goop feels runny but still mold-able in your hands.

    • 2

Pour the goop onto a cookie sheet and cut it with plastic knives, cookie cutters, plastic lids or anything else you can find around the house. The cutting instruments should be something that washes easily but will leave interesting shapes. Observe the way the goop crumbles then melts back together.

    • 3

Fill a baby food jar half-way with prepared goop. Stick a few small plastic toys inside and let someone excavate them from the goop using straws, spoons or fingers.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add more water as needed, but only a teaspoon at a time so it doesn't get too runny. Store in a plastic container with a lid for later use and add water as needed. Goop can last weeks if properly stored, but it will dry up easily when played with so expect to replace it often.

  • Food coloring may stain fingers, clothes and more. Use caution and cover your work space and protect your clothing before beginning this project.
