How to Roast Green Coffee Beans

It is the usually the true coffee connoisseur who contemplates roasting coffee beans at home. Coffee beans start to lose their original flavor and aroma as soon as one week after roasting. So, if you like the best taste possible in your cup of morning coffee, learning to roast green coffee beans is a necessity. Following is the stovetop method of roasting green coffee beans.   • Green coffee beans
  • Stovetop
  • Heavy cast iron skillet

      On the stovetop, heat the frying pan to a temperature of approximately 475 degrees. This will typically be a medium or medium/high setting on your stove.

      Pour 8 ounces of green coffee beans in the frying pan and begin to stir constantly. The beans should ideally be stirred at least every 30 seconds, if not more often. After about five minutes the beans will start to make a crackling sound, and they will begin to smoke. The smoke should not smell of burning, but of coffee.

      Check the coffee beans every minute after they start crackling, to see if they have reached the desired roast.

      When the beans are roasted sufficiently, then remove them from the stove and pour them into the colander. Allow them to cool.

Tips & Warnings

  • Constant stirring reduces the chances of burning the coffee beans, so do not forget to stir your beans consistently.

  • The outer skin of the coffee beans, called the chaff, is shed during the roasting process. Toss the roasted beans once they have been placed in the colander to remove the chaff.

  • Work in a properly ventilated area, as the beans will smoke when they are roasting.
