How to Attach an Ice Axe Leash
An ice ax leash is a piece of strong cord that connects through the loop at the base of an ice ax handle, and is wrapped around the wrist of the user. The leash ensures that if the ax is dropped it will not plummet away from the user, as the wrist loop will catch, keeping it well within reach. This is most beneficial when climbing a great height, where a lost ax could be highly dangerous.

1
Determine if you want to use a long leash or a short leash. Most climbers prefer a leash that is about 2 feet long, allowing the ax to be passed between hands if needed without changing the loop. However some prefer a leash of only a few inches.
-
2
Multiply your desired leash length by two, then add 18 inches, and cut a piece of Paracord to this length. The doubling is because the cord will be tied in a loop, and the additional inches account for the wrist loop.

3
Tie the two ends of the cord tightly together with a double knot. You will end up with a loop of cord.
-
4
Tie a garth-hitch knot by sliding one end of the loop through the hole in the base of the ax handle, then passing the other end of the loop through the portion that has passed through to the other side of the handle and pulling tight.
-
5
Wrap the end of cord farthest from the ax handle around your wrist with a small amount of slack. You want the loop formed to be just large enough to fit your hand through, but tight enough that it will not easily slip off your hand if the ax is dropped.
-
6
Tie a double knot in the cord to create your wrist loop.
