How to Have a Low Cost Funeral
Funerals provide closure to grieving families, but the cost can create added stress during an already emotional time. While most families do not have time or the extra emotional strength needed to search for ways to save money while planning for a funeral, there are simple ways to cut costs and create a beautiful service without breaking the budget.

The first step in planning a funeral is to meet with the funeral home. In the event of an unexpected death, there is rarely time to talk with more than a few funeral homes before making a choice. Hospitals or hospices can give information on funeral homes in the area, although they are often not allowed to tell you which funeral home provides the best value. Friends and family members who have lost a loved one in the past and are familiar with funeral homes in the area can be a great resource. Be sure to choose a funeral director who is licensed and has a reputation of being honest and kind. (see References 1)

Do not be afraid to ask for a discount. Be clear with the funeral director about what your budget is. Some funeral homes will allow you to save money by providing some of the services yourself, such as printing programs, planning a program, and arranging for flowers.

Ask for help with the program from family members and friends. Ask a musically talented family member to sing a song or play an instrument at the funeral. Ask a tech-savvy friend to create a video montage set to music to play during the viewing. Having family members and friends participate in the service is a great way to save money and adds a wonderful personal touch to a funeral.

Cemetery plots are often expensive and can be a major expense after the death of a loved one. Visit several cemeteries in the area to see if one is more affordable than the others. Infants can be buried on top of an existing grave if you have family buried in the area.

While many funeral homes offer package deals, some may allow you to purchase a casket from another location. Discount warehouse clubs often offer caskets on their Web sites for a substantial discount.

6
Temporary headstone markers can often be purchased through the cemetery or through the funeral home and used until you can afford a permanent one.

Tips & Warnings
Many credit unions and other organizations offer small life-insurance policies automatically with membership. Check with all of the organizations that the deceased was a member of to see if there are any programs in place to help with the cost of the funeral.
Avoid working with a funeral home that tries to talk you into services you cannot afford. Look for a funeral director who is mindful of your needs and your budget.
