How to Read the Serial Number on a Yamaha Golf Cart

Of the millions of golf carts in existence, those built by Yamaha remain the most difficult to find information on. Their models differ only slightly in appearance, making easy visual identification almost impossible. Also, the company has changed the location of the serial number several times, and the code itself offers little in the way of identification. Other golf cart manufacturers place important information into their serial numbers, such as the year and model. Yamaha provides none of that. Their serial numbers are like fingerprints in that you will need a separate database to find information on your unique code.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the serial number by looking around the front cabin. Since the early 1990s, Yamaha has affixed the plate or sticker either beneath the glove box or along the front rubber molding.

    • 2

Search the secondary location if Step 1 fails. Lift the seat and look by the floorboard. Yamaha carts built between 1988 and 1990 have the serial number there.

    • 3

Check underneath the rear bumper if you still can't find the tag. The serial number appears there on early model Yamaha carts. With some models you must pull the release lever to lift the cart's rear section.

    • 4

      Write down the serial number.

    • 5

Access the Internet to cross-reference your number with the charts of Yamaha golf cart primary identification codes. Find the shared code characters to identify the model. For example, all G16 gas carts contain "JN6" in their serial numbers, "JR1" appears on all G19 electrical carts, and "JG5" identifies all G9 models. Specifying the model lets you know in what year your cart could have been built.

Send your cart's serial number along with a request for information to one of several websites maintained by those who repair or collect Yamaha golf carts. Some possess comprehensive lists of Yamaha serial numbers through the years.

Tips & Warnings

  • Visit the websites listed under Resources below for the tables on Yamaha primary identification codes.

  • Remember that finding information on Yamaha golf carts is very difficult. The serial number provides no specific data on the year or model, and only through an examination of complex codes can you discover the most basic information. Even then, limitations apply. For example, Yamaha marks G2 carts with numbers from "J38" through "J55," but the G3 and G5 also bear numbers between "J42" and "J50."

  • Realize there is little else you can do. Yamaha serial numbers are notoriously difficult to decipher.
