How to Troubleshoot a Dell Photo AIO Printer Scanner

Purchasing an all-in-one printer and scanner makes a lot of sense and carries a lot of advantages. Combining the functionality of a printer and a scanner into one unit frees up additional desk space and makes it easier to work. Combining the functions of the two units into one can also yield considerable cost savings compared to the cost of purchasing a separate scanner and printer. When something goes wrong, however, it is important to know what steps to take. Having some basic troubleshooting skills under your belt will make it easier to solve problems when they do occur.

Check the print cartridges, especially if you started experiencing problems right after a new set of cartridges were installed. Replacement ink cartridges for Dell printers are shipped with packing materials in place, including a piece of tape that covers and protects the ink jets. If this protective covering is not removed when the ink cartridge is installed, the printer may still work but it will print blank pages. Remove the ink cartridge and remove any packing materials that might have been missed, then reinstall the cartridge.

Remove any paper that may be stuck in the paper path. The most common place for the paper to get stuck is right inside the tray. Some Dell all-in-one printers will try to grab multiple sheets of paper instead of just one, and that is a common source of paper jams. This is a particular problem if the paper has accumulated moisture--the additional moisture will cause the paper to stick together. Remove the paper from the tray and fan it thoroughly--this will reduce the amount of paper dust and help to wick away any accumulated moisture. Replace the paper and try your print job again. Be careful not to overfill the paper tray, as overfilling could lead to paper jams as well.

Install a new print driver if the printer has been printing erratically. Sometimes a print driver will become corrupt, and that can cause problems such as garbled print and blank pages. To update the driver for your Dell AIO printer scanner, simply right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties" from the menu. Click the "Hardware" tab and click the "Device Manager" button. When the Device Manager opens, locate the entry for your Dell AIO and right-click it. Choose "Update Driver" from the menu to have your operating system search for and install a suitable driver.
