How to Fast to Help Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal fatigue is a condition in which hormones become unbalanced, resulting in overproduction of adrenal hormones, causing chronic fatigue. Symptoms may include difficulty concentrating, poor digestion, anxiety, low blood pressure and irritability. Treatment takes anywhere from six months to two years for the body to recover.

Adrenal fatigue is sometimes caused by an unhealthy diet. If your diet consists heavily of refined carbohydrates and sugary foods, you can detoxify your body by fasting to help your adrenal glands.

Instructions

  1. Fasting and Detoxifying Process

    • 1

See a physician first to ensure that your body is capable of fasting. The type of fasting depends on the condition of your adrenals. Your doctor should put together a fasting plan with guidelines on how to fast safely and for how long.

    • 2

Before fasting, avoid drinking caffeinated drinks such as coffee and tea. Tom Cargill, research director at St. Theodore's Hospital recommends light aerobic exercise beginning a few days before the fast to oxygenate the blood and flush out metabolic waste.

Depending on your physician's advice, fasting can last anywhere from one to three weeks.

Supplements are usually unnecessary during fasting since raw juices contain enough vitamins and minerals to sustain your body. According to Dr. Denice Moffat of Natural Health Techniques, 100 percent fruit juice fast is not recommended. Fruit juices should be diluted with water or vegetable juice due to the high sugar content.

If you are unable to fast, supplements specifically for adrenaline fatigue sufferers are available. In addition, adrenal fatigue can also be treated with hormone injections of adrenaline or cortisol. Your doctor may also recommend taking minerals and vitamins such as vitamin B-complex that may restore adrenal function.

Tips & Warnings

  • Side effects of fasting may include feelings of weakness due to lack of carbohydrates usually ingested.

  • Generally, people that are malnourished and underweight, recently underwent surgery, or are pregnant or lactating should not fast. Additionally, fasting is recommended for adults only and not children.
