How to Replace Carpet on a Bass Boat

Bass boats that have carpet installed may need to have it replaced when it gets old or worn. Carpet on a bass boat that gets wet a lot can also begin to smell bad over time. Replacing the carpet on a bass boat will first require you to cut out the old carpet. The next step will be to measure the deck of your bass boat for the new carpet before it can be installed.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Cardboard
  • Utility knife
  • Power drill (optional)
  • Stripping wheel attachment (optional)
  • Scraper

Instructions

    • 1

Decide the amount of carpet that you want to remove or replace on your bass boat. If you have carpet that covers the deck surface and the compartments you may only want to replace the carpet on the deck.

    • 2

Cut the carpet along the bottom of each compartment, where the compartment meets the deck surface, with a utility knife.

    • 3

Pull the old carpet off to expose the original deck surface underneath.

    • 4

Examine the deck surface to see how the carpet was secured to the deck. If the carpet was secure to the deck using glue, there may be residue that needs to be removed.

    • 5

Remove the glue from the deck surface using a scraper. Alternatively, you can use a stripping wheel attachment with a power drill.

    • 6

Measure the length and with of the deck of your bass boat with a tape measure.

    • 7

Transfer the measurements to a cardboard template. The template will be used to trace the outline of the boat deck on the carpet.

    • 8

Place the template over the new carpet for your bass boat. Set the carpet face-down so that the back of the carpet is facing up. Place the cardboard template upside-down over the top of the carpet.

    • 9

Cut around the edge of the template with the utility knife.

    • 10

Place the cut piece of carpet on the boat deck to make sure that it fits properly.

    • 11

Apply construction adhesive to the back side of the carpet and then lay it down on the deck of the boat.

    • 12

Let the construction adhesive dry for at least 24 hours before using the boat.

Tips & Warnings

  • Carpet on the decking is going to get more abuse than carpet on the compartments.

  • If you do not want to use construction adhesive to secure the carpet, spray adhesive can be used.

  • If your bass boat is entirely fiberglass, the stripping attachment may gouge the decking.
