How to Use a Snap Installation Tool for Crafts

Many craft projects require the installation of snaps. When purchasing snaps for a project make sure to buy the snap installation kit and not just the snaps. You must use special tools when attaching snaps to anything such as clothing, bags, purses and many other craft projects. There are several types of snaps such as regular and magnetic. There are also heavy-duty snaps with longer studs for larger projects and projects where the snap will get a lot of use. Choose which type of snap will work best for your particular project before you buy anything.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the package and familiarize yourself with each of the different pieces. Examine the stud and eyelet pieces to the snaps and see how they should work together as well as the closure side of the snaps.

    • 2

Use a measuring tape for installing several snaps on one craft. Measure and make marks with a marker to make sure your snaps are evenly spaced.

    • 3

Put some kind of protection on your work surface such as a cutting board or other heavy object.

    • 4

Poke a hole through your project where you want to place the snap using the disk and awl that comes with the installation kit. Tap is three times with the hammer to make the hole.

    • 5

Insert the snaps into the plastic tools that came with the installation kit.

    • 6

Stick the post part of the snap through the hole. Place the stud part of the snap on top of the post.

    • 7

Lay the whole snap on your work surface. Make sure the layers are sitting together properly before you hammer them together to prevent damage to the snaps.

    • 8

Use a hammer that came with the snap installation kit to attach the stud to the post. Do not go overboard with your hammering since two or three good strikes should be sufficient to connect the pieces of the snap.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the table you are hammering on is very stable. Do not hammer the snap pieces together on a table that is strong or you are likely to break the table.

  • There are snap installation tools available for purchase where all you have to do is press the handle together much like a hole punch works. These are a little expensive, but worth it if you install a lot of snaps.

  • Choose a snap with a longer stud for craft projects that are thicker, especially when using fabrics such as canvas.
