How to Make Your Computer Have More Memory & Work Faster
In computing, "memory" refers to random access memory, or RAM, which is a type of temporary data storage module that helps a computer run smoothly. One of the primary reasons computers run slowly is an insufficient amount of RAM. As programs and processes run on a computer, the data necessary for those processes is stored in the RAM; if too many processes are running at once, RAM reaches its capacity, which can cause significant lag. Installing more memory in your computer is an economical and effective way to make it run faster.

1
Buy a new RAM module or modules for your computer. Check the website of your computer or motherboard maker to make sure you get RAM that's compatible with your computer.
-
2
Turn off your computer, and take out all the cords.
-
-
3
Open your computer's case using a screwdriver. Cases normally open by taking out a few screws along the right side of the back of the case. Some computer makers use specially designed cases without screws.
-
4
Uninstall the old RAM module(s). Locate the RAM, and press down firmly on both plastic locking tabs on either side of the module. The stick pops loose; remove it from the case, and set it aside.
-
5
Install the new module(s). Set the stick in the open slot in the same orientation as the module you removed. Push it down firmly on both sides until the locking clamps clip in around it. It's often easiest to push down on the module using both thumbs.
-
6
Close your computer case, plug in the cords and turn on your computer. Your computer automatically uses the new RAM without any additional software installation. If insufficient RAM was slowing down your computer, you'll likely see an immediate improvement in speed.

Tips & Warnings
If your computer already has an adequate amount of RAM, installing more RAM may not lead to a noticeable increase in computing speed.
Replacing old RAM with newer RAM that operates at a faster clock speed may increase computing speed, even if you don't increase the total amount of RAM.
