How to Find Out Whether an Inmate Is Deceased

Because it can be difficult to keep up with someone who has been incarcerated, you might find you need to check whether the inmate is alive or has passed away. However, finding out information about inmates in the United States is easy. Once someone commits a crime in the U.S., he loses much of the privacy that an average citizen can expect. With some basic information about the inmate, you will be able to find out whether that inmate is deceased.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down all the basic information you know about the inmate you are inquiring about--first name, middle name, last name, race, sex, age and prison ID number.

    • 2

Find out whether the inmate was held in a federal or state prison. If you aren't sure, you will just have to search in both locations for the information you want.

    • 3

If the inmate was a federal prisoner, type his basic information into the Inmate Locator on the Federal Bureau of Prisons website. You will need at least his first and last name. This will provide you with a list of inmates that fit the information you provided. Find the inmate you are looking for on the list. If he is deceased, that information will appear in the column where prisoner release dates are located.

    • 4

If the inmate was a state prisoner, go to the website for that state's justice department. For example, if the inmate was in a Maryland prison, go to Maryland's Department of Corrections website. Type in the information you have about the inmate into the inmate locator for a list of matches. If he is deceased, that information will be provided.
