Instructions

    • 1

Lay the napkin flat on a table. Fold it in half from the left. You will have a long rectangle with the fold on the left side.

    • 2

Bring the top corners down to meet in the middle, forming a point at the top of the rectangle. Repeat with the bottom corners.

    • 3

Fold the top point down to the middle, then fold the bottom point up to meet it. Now you will have a square with the points meeting in the middle.

    • 4

Pick up the top corners and fold the napkin in half over to the bottom to make a rectangle. The open edges should be at the bottom, with a fold on top.

    • 5

Pick up the top layer of the right bottom corner and fold it over to the left bottom corner. You will have a large triangle in the middle with a part of the napkins sticking up above the left side.

    • 6

Fold the same corner, now the left bottom corner, back to the right bottom corner. Now the top right corner is tucked inside the napkin.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 with the left corner. Now the upper left corner is tucked inside the napkin as well, making a triangle. You can crease the napkin with an iron at this point to make sure the edges are crisp.

    • 8

Fold the top layer of the right bottom corner over to the left bottom corner. Now you are ready to stand the napkin up on a dinner plate.

    • 9

Position the four "branches" of the tree evenly on the plate's surface. If you like, you can add embellishments such as ornaments at the top or small toy "presents" around the bottom and inside the folds to resemble a Christmas tree.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a napkin ring with a star or bow shape and place at the top of each napkin to make a Christmas tree.

  • Use napkins whose fabric is in contrast to the plates they will be placed upon to make the napkin trees more noticeable.

  • Reversible napkins with a different design on each side make a more interesting tree.
