How to Install Shingles on Valley Flashing
Installing shingles on your roof can be time-consuming, but doing it yourself can save money. One potential difficulty is putting shingles over valley flashing. Valleys are where two sections of roof connect at a lower angle than other parts of the roof. Flashing is metal that helps prevent leaks, but an incorrect installation could cause leakage instead. Cut out a strip of roofing felt. It must be 36 inches wide and long enough to fit between the ridge of the roof and its eaves. Lay the strip of felt directly over the valley flashing. Use your heavy-duty stapler to attach the felt to the roof. Felt comes in a roll and will have lines painted on it to help you keep shingle placement straight.

Snap two chalk lines on the valley. Start at the ridge of the roof and center both chalk lines about 6 inches apart. Take the chalk lines down the valley, moving them apart just a bit as you make your way to the eaves. The chalk lines should separate by 1/8 inch every foot lower than the roof's ridge. If you haven't used a chalk line, just remember to shake the container before using so the chalk will evenly distribute on the line. Then, hold the line taut between the ridge and eaves and snap it against the valley.

Start measuring shingles for the valley. Lay shingles down to the edge of the chalk lines. If they don't fit properly, cut them to fit with a utility knife. Once you've measured and cut all shingles for the roof valley, start installing them.

Put roofing cement on shingle edges. Press the shingle down into place on the valley. Now, take your nails, usually about four per shingle. Position them at least 6 inches away from your chalk lines. Hammer them directly in going across the middle of the shingle. Do not hammer nails at an angle since it could crack the shingles.

Stay away from antennas and power lines near your roof. Make sure your ladder is sturdy before going up or down.
