How to Use Tiffany Garden Stepping Stones

Tiffany stained glass is known for the Tiffany Studios' use of opalescent glass in a variety of colors and textures. Today, when we think of stained glass, we think of this style, rather than of glass painting. Mosaic patterns are very popular for stepping stones. You can assemble some pre-cut glass mosaic patterns to resemble Tiffany stained-glass patterns. Stepping stones made in this way make unique decorative accents for the garden. It is easy to create stepping stones using a kit, and to incorporate them into a garden landscape.

Instructions

    • 1

Protect your work area and yourself by covering all surfaces with plastic sheeting and putting on protective clothing, work gloves, goggles and breathing mask.

    • 2

Lay out your mosaic pieces in the design that you will press into your stepping stone.

    • 3

Lay a piece of chicken wire down on your work surface. Place your drip saucer on top of this to use as a guide and cut the chicken wire using wire nippers so that it is slightly smaller than the drip saucer.

    • 4

Mix your concrete with water so that it is the consistency of a mud pie. The ratio will be approximately 1-part water to 3-parts concrete.

    • 5

Press concrete into your saucer until it is about half full. Lay chicken wire on top, and then fill the saucer the remaining way with concrete.

    • 6

Wait 30 to 60 minutes for the concrete to begin setting.

    • 7

Press the pieces of the mosaic into the concrete so that the top edge of the mosaic is flush with the concrete. Wipe away any concrete that runs over the top of the mosaic pieces. Tap the sides of the container to remove air bubbles. If you make a mistake, remove the mosaic piece, smooth with a craft spoon and start again.

    • 8

Allow concrete to dry and cure for 2 to 3 days.

    • 9

Turn your stepping stone over and release from the saucer.

    • 10

Select a spot for your stepping stone in your yard. Dig a hole for the stone that is the exact size of the stone. Make the hole 1/2 inch shallower than the stone, so that your stone only sticks above the ground by 1/2 inch.

    • 11

Place the stone in the hole and fill in the edges with loose dirt.
