How to Prevent Injury Incidents on the Job Site

Every job site should have a prevention program in place to properly prevent injuries from occurring. All employers owe it to their employees to provide them with a safe and secure area in which to work. In today's economy, companies are seeing a spike in their accident claims. In many cases, the number of accident claims that are filed are producing losses exceeding their profits. With this spike, many companies are returning to a back-to-basics philosophy in regard to safety and are upgrading their prevention programs.

Instructions

    • 1

Conduct a safety orientation with all new employees. Prior to stepping foot into the work area, you need to provide the new employee with your company's standard operating safety procedures. By providing them with this knowledge, you give them the tools they need to complete their work safely and return home to their families uninjured. Most companies have a safety video they show new hires that give them a better understanding on the do's and don'ts the company wants them to follow. Also follow a checklist for managers who present the class to the new hires. Once the checklist of topics has been covered, have the new hires sign it to verify that they understand what was covered.

    • 2

Create a safety team. This team should meet once a week and be comprised of team members from every department at the job site. These members should represent their department or area where safety is concerned. They are also responsible for taking any information that was shared at the meeting and communicating it back to the other employees in their department.

    • 3

Identify and correct the hazards of a particular job. Analyzing employee job safety is a proactive accident prevention tool that helps by evaluating each job step. Also, any new or modified programs are reviewed using the prevention tool prior to implementation.

    • 4

Perform an inspection audit. Employees can utilize a checklist to continuously review any safety issues that arise at the site. Also, designate a department head to conduct an internal and external audit at various departments each year to review compliance and safety issues.

    • 5

Recognize and reward your employees by providing them with an incentive program to perform operations safely. Keep the incentive program visible for all employees to view and keep up with number of accidents for the year.

    • 6

Investigate any injury and identify the root causes, provide any corrective actions needed, and follow-up with the injured employee to prevent accident recurrences.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many firms write a formalized Heath and Safety Plan (HASP) for each new project. The HASP must be reviewed and signed by every worker on the job site at the beginning of each day.
