To determine the size of a quilt that you already have measure the length and width of quilt with a ruler from edge to edge. Compare your measurements with the stated standards to find what size you have. If working from a pattern the size of the quilt is usually predetermined and stated on the front of the pattern.

To make a quilt to fit your bed you need to accurately measure your mattress. Measure the length and width of your bed and write these numbers down. Measure the thickness of the mattress and write that number down. Add the thickness to the length of the mattress for a quilt length. Multiply the thickness times two and then add that number to the width to find the quilt width. If you wish the quilt to cover the box spring add those thicknesses to the length and width as was done for the mattress thickness.
