How to Use & Dilute Compost Tea

Compost tea is made up of garden compost soaked in water, with the compost filtered out. It can be applied to either the roots or leaves of plants in place of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and fungicides. About 12 to 15 hours after "brewing," it can be sprayed onto leaves or poured from a bucket onto roots. A ratio of 10:1 water to tea concentrate is recommended for application onto plant leaves. Root applications do not need to be diluted. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Strain tea through a mesh cloth or cheesecloth into a bucket.

    • 2

If you plan to spray onto plant leaves, dilute with one part tea to 10 parts filtered water or well water (if available).

    • 3

Pour diluted tea into a spray bottle and add a drop of vegetable oil. Spray onto leaves.

    • 4

For use on root systems of hardier plants (older and not potted), skip steps 2 and 3. Pour the tea directly from the bucket onto the roots.
