How to Make a Homemade Diaper for a Dog Who Is in Heat
If you have ever had a female dog that was not fixed, you probably know the joy of a dog in heat. When in heat, the dog will menstruate as a woman would. This can cause stains on your carpet, furniture and bedding. There are doggie diapers on the market specifically for a dog in heat; however, they can be expensive and do not stay on your dog well. You can make your own diaper for a dog in heat using either swim diapers or boy's briefs for very little money.

Purchase a pack of baby diapers for swimming. These have elastic sides instead of the tabs used on regular diapers. They are disposable and intended for your baby to wear when she is swimming. The size you need depends on the size of your dog. If you are unable to find swim diapers, use a regular diaper instead; however, be aware that the Velcro strips can come undone on a regular diaper. A third option is to use disposable training pants. These will have the elastic sides like the swim diaper, but you may not be able to find a small enough size for your dog.

Inspect the inside of the diaper to determine which side has the most padding. You want the side with the most padding to be the bottom of the diaper because this will be the side used for absorption.

Cut a hole for your dog's tail. The easiest way to do this is to put the swim diaper on your dog. Determine approximately where your dog's tail will be and remove the diaper. Use scissors to cut a hole large enough for your dog's tail to slip through. If you have a dog whose tail is docked, you will not need to do this step.

Put the swim diaper back on your dog. Her back legs should be through the leg holes and her tail should be through the hole you just cut.

Change the diaper as needed.

Purchase a pair of boy's briefs. The size will be determined by the size of your dog. If you have a very large breed dog such as a Mastiff, you can use men's briefs.

Place the briefs on your dog so they are backward. The flap should be on top and the back of the briefs should be on the bottom. Her back legs should go through the leg holes. You can put her tail through the flap in the front of the briefs.

Place a feminine pad inside the brief on the underside of your dog. For best results, use a pad that has double strip of sticky tape to hold it in place.

Change the feminine pad as needed.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure you remove the diaper when you let your dog out to use the bathroom.

This seems like a good idea...I'm going to try this in a few minutes and see if it works for my puppy. I'm just curious as how to cinch up extra fabric as my dog is a chihuahua. I'm thinking I'll use something sticky and easy to get on and off like a heavy duty tape.

I tried using the 2nd method- using boys underwear and a maxi pad but my beagle had a hard time keeping them on even after I synched them up a bit with safety pins. I also tried to use a regular baby diaper wich seemed to work ok until I started noticing those little absorption crystals (found in some diapers) all over my house leaking out of the hole I cut out for her tail. I'm looking forward to trying the diapers made for swimming to see how they hold up.
