How to Make Jean Skirt
Instead of throwing out an old pair of jeans, try a simple method to transform them into a fashionable, unique jean skirt. Using a pair of your jeans makes the task easier than starting from scratch, because the basic pattern has already been made. The skirt length can be short or long, depending on preference, and can have a variety of finishes and accents. Due to the type of fabric involved, basic sewing machine skills are necessary.

1
Turn the jeans inside out. Using the seam ripper, rip the inseams from ankle to crotch to ankle. Turn the pants right side out and rip the remaining inseams. One edge will be frayed, and the other will be smooth.
-
2
Rip the seams from the crotch to under the zipper, taking care not to rip any stitches holding the zipper. Rip the seams from the crotch to about 1/2 inch under the back pockets. If there are no back pockets, about 6 inches from the waist.

3
Lay the jeans on a flat surface and, starting from the top, pin the front panels together, placing the smooth edge on top. Make sure not to bubble the fabric under the zipper, especially directly under the zipper. Repeat for the back panels.
-
4
Try on the skirt to decide length and see if the pins need to be adjusted. Cut the skirt to desired length, leaving at least one inch for a hem, and pin.
-
5
Turn the skirt inside out and sew the back panels together along the pins, making sure to keep the fabric taut. Repeat for the front panels.
-
6
Hem the bottom of the skirt or stitch for a frayed, contemporary look.

Tips & Warnings
Working with denim can be easier after the material has been ironed, especially when trying to hem.
You can make your jean skirt fuller across the hips by adding discarded denim along the back pockets. Make the jean skirt fuller across the bottom by adding a complimentary pattern of fabric, like cotton, along the bottom.
Embellish your new skirt with jewels, fabric paint or different shaped patches of fabric.
