1
Go to an outdoor outfitter or a sporting goods store in your area. You can also visit a local indoor rock-climbing facility to check if they sell climbing belts. Speak with experienced salespeople and/or rock climbers about different sizes and measurements.
-
2
Select the climbing belt or harness that is made for your specific climbing activity in mind. This may include multipurpose, big wall, competition or alpine.
-
-
3
Determine your climbing belt size by trying several sizes. Expect to see typical sizes like extra small, small, medium, large, extra large. Look for proper fit instead of insisting on one size as your exact size will depend on the manufacturer.
-
4
Look for a waist belt fit that is snug but comfortable. It should sit right above your hip bones and tight enough so it doesn't pull down from your hips. Give at least three inches of strap length to extend out of the belt's buckle once you secured, doubled back and tightened it.

When measuring for the harness leg loops, look for a fit that is also snug, but not too restricting or tight. Some leg loop designs are adjustable and if so, its webbing strap length should be sufficient for you to have at least two inches extra after doubling it back through the buckles.
