How to Create a Line Graph on Open Office
OpenOffice.org offers a suite of free productivity tools comparable to Microsoft Office. The open source nature of the software means updates and improvements are constant and aimed at bettering the user experience. Creating line graphs in OpenOffice's CALC program takes only a few clicks once information is entered into a spreadsheet. Though the basic creation is simple, you'll discover almost endless ways to customize the included data and look of your chart.

Open a spreadsheet containing the information you wish to plot on the line graph in OpenOffice's Calc program. If you have not yet created a spreadsheet, enter the appropriate data into a new spreadsheet. For a line graph, you will need at least two columns of information to plot the X axis and Y axis of the chart.

Select the information you wish to appear in the line graph by clicking on a cell and dragging to highlight the data.

From the top task bar, click "Insert" and choose "Chart ..." from the drop-down menu. The Chart AutoPilot dialog will appear.

Double-check the "Range" form to make sure the correct data are included, and choose the labeling options for the chart. Select the output spreadsheet for the graph, and click "Next >>" when you are finished.

Choose the line graph option from the "Choose a chart type" selection box. A basic 2D line graph will be the first option. Select this and click "Next >>."

Fine-tune the chart options on the next page of the AutoPilot dialog. Select the options you wish to enable and click "Next >>."

Enter a title and labels for each axis on the final page of the AutoPilot dialog. Click "Create" when you are finished. The line graph will be generated on the spreadsheet specified in Step 4.

Tips & Warnings
At any point, you can simply click "Create" in the AutoPilot to generate the chart. Clicking on the chart will allow you to go back and edit certain characteristics.
