Instructions

Determine what type of role play you wish to conduct, for there are numerous websites for each type of role play. Role play websites exist that are targeted specifically to fans of books, movies and music, and other free-form role play websites exist where you can create your own general character.

    • 2

Sign up for an account at the role play website of your choice. Don't limit yourself exclusively to websites denoted for a specific type of role play, though. A website for the type of role play you wish to conduct might not exist. Many people role play on social networking websites like MySpace and email groups like Yahoo Groups.

Create your character with which you will role play. Design an avatar or image of your character, or use a photo of a famous person if you wish, which is extremely popular. If you wish to role play as Christine Daae from "The Phantom of the Opera," you might want to use a photo of the actress, Emmy Rossum, who starred in the movie, or you might want to use a photo of the soprano, Sarah Brightman, who starred in the Broadway musical. If you decide to use a photo of a famous person to represent your character, be sure to include a disclaimer somewhere on your page stating that you are not that person in real life.

    • 4

Design your role play profile by uploading the image of your character and writing a synopsis of your character. Design your page to reflect the theme of your character's time period and interests as well. If you were to role play as Christine Daae, your profile might feature images of a late-1800s opera house, red roses, sheet music and masks.

Create a role playing network by searching the website for friends with whom you would like to role play. Read about other people's characters and ask them to add you as a friend if you would like to role play with them. Usually, the person who requests to be friends is the one who is expected to initiate the role play. Simply send a starter message introducing your character to the other person's character.

    • 6

Respond to and send messages to keep your role plays going. Keep the story line creative and get inspiration from the other person's responses to keep your role play going smoothly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Read any rules posted on the pages of people with whom you role play, for some people specify certain situations that they are not comfortable role playing.

  • Send private messages to the person with whom you are role playing if you wish to ask him something out of character, such as ideas for future role play situations you might want to implement into your role play.

  • Never disclose personal details on the Internet, such as your full name and address, in order to preserve your safety.

  • Remember that role play is fantasy---not real life, and beware of attaching false expectations to people based upon their role play characters.
