How to Design a Home Office Around Dog Crates

Dog crates are a necessity in many households with canines. Crates are a training tool that dog owners use to housebreak a puppy. However, these sometimes large cages are not the most attractive when it comes to incorporating them with your home design. In a home office environment, you can easily design the room around the crates for a more attractive and comfortable appearance. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Find a place to effectively "hide" the crate. This does not mean putting the crate in a closet or tucking it into a small, cramped space. Instead, place the crate on one side of your desk so that it is not the first thing that is seen when entering the room. Or, place it against the wall at the entance; when viewing the room from the door, the crate is less visible.

    • 2

Purchase a specialty crate, or build your own according to the office design. Specialty crates come in a multitude of different materials such as wood, wicker and wire. Choose a specialty cage that appeals to your design.

    • 3

Make a desk support out of your dog's crate. Do this by purchasing a used desk and remove one of the sides or the legs on one side. Place a piece of sized plywood on the top of the crate, making sure there is little or no overhang. Set the desk on top of the crate, using the crate as the "legs" to support one side of the desk. If you have two dogs, simply place a desktop or stained plywood piece over both crates for support.

    • 4

Drape an attractive blanket or curtain over the crate when not in use. When the dog needs to enter, flip the blanket or curtain back over the top.

    • 5

Make a "doggy corner." Give your pet his own office space by positioning the crate, dog bed and toys in one corner of your room. Frame photos of you and your dog, obedience certificates or funny dog comics, and hang them in that area. You can even create a "desk" for your dog with raised food and water dishes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wicker dog crates should be avoided if you have a puppy or a dog that chews.
