1
Enlist the assistance of brutally honest friends. Invite them to come to your home as a potential buyer and point out any areas of concern that would prevent them from making an offer. Many times, as the owner, it is difficult to see the areas that need the most help.

2
Examine the curb appeal of the home. Trim bushes, cut the grass and rake the leaves. Add seasonal flowers in pots near the entrance to draw their eyes to the door. Clear the front porch or entrance of any debris or clutter. Give the front door a fresh coat of paint and clean any light fixtures. Put out a new welcome mat. If there is a sitting area near the front entrance, consider adding a few chairs or a bench to make it an inviting area.

3
Clear the entryway. When potential buyers enter the house, it should be clutter free and open. Remove any personal effects such as pictures and let the light shine into this area. A bright and airy entryway can give the illusion of more space within the home.
-
4
Declutter the closest and storage spaces. If a potential buyer sees storage spaces, closets and cabinets crammed full of belongings, it can give the impression that there is not enough storage space in the home.
-
5
Rearrange furniture in the house to center around the focal point of the room. If there is a fireplace, this should always serve as a focal point. Open the blinds and curtains to let the light into the room. Brighter spaces appear larger. Put a new, neutral coat of paint on the walls to freshen up the rooms. If there is too much furniture in the room or the furniture is the wrong scale for the room, remove a few pieces and begin the packing process early. Tattered furniture should be slipcovered or replaced for effective home staging.

6
Clean the home. Carpets should be freshly cleaned, floors should be sparkling and countertops should be free of clutter. Polish and clean all kitchen appliances, light fixtures and bathrooms. When people see a clean, well-kept home, they assume there is little maintenance needed.
