How to Get WiFi Through Cable Service

There's nothing that particularly distinguishes a wireless Internet connection from a cable connection beyond the delivery method. In fact, you can change your wired/cable Internet connection to a wireless or WiFi hot spot with one piece of equipment. This lets you move around the house with your laptop, or easily connect more than one computer to the Internet through the same access point at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a wireless router with an Ethernet port; such items are usually available for well under $100, and you can sometimes find them for less than $50.

    • 2

Plug the Ethernet cable from your cable modem into the Ethernet port of the wireless router, just as you would do if you were plugging the modem into your computer.

    • 3

Power the wireless router up and configure it--methods for configuring will vary from model to model but usually involve either installing the router's included software on your computer or, if no software is needed, directing your web browser to a specific IP address to access the router. The router will now be broadcasting your cable Internet access as a wireless signal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't forget to password protect your new WiFi signal to help keep you from accidentally supplying WiFi "poachers" with free bandwidth.
