How to Write a Video Game Manual
There is no sense creating a video game or distributing one if nobody knows how to play it. New players should be introduced to your game by reading an instruction manual. Manuals include introductions, controls, aspects of game play and tips and tricks for new players. After reading the manual, the gamer should be able to jump right in without feeling lost or confused.

1
Write an introduction for your game. This should describe any back story associated with the game or the general task that will be laid in front of the player. Type the story into a word processing program such as Microsoft Word or Open Office.
-
2
Create a chart and list of every button associated with the controller or keyboard that will be used for the game. For example, if the game is to be played on a PlayStation 3, your list will include the four face buttons (Triangle, Square, Circle and X), the four shoulder buttons (L1, L2, R1 and R2) and the two control sticks and directional pad.

-
3
Describe the use of each button and put this information in the chart. Multiple uses for one button should be written separately so as not to confuse the reader.
-
4
Type out instructions on how to begin a game. This may include selecting a game mode from the main menu or choosing between single and multiplayer matches. Write each instruction step by step to lead players from starting the game to the moment they begin controlling their character.
-
5
Take screenshots of the game. The screen shots should encompass what your player will see during a typical game-play session. Label each part of the screenshot. Include labels for health bars, score, enemies and items -- everything your game has to offer.
-
6
Expand on the labels you have made for your screenshots. On a new page, write down what items are used for or how many different levels or types of terrain are present in the game. Weapons and enemies should also be given their own category.
-
7
Provide tips for new players that will help them progress through the first portion of the game. Sports games should include useful plays; fighting games should include defensive and offensive tactics.
-
8
Organize all of your content into one document. Either print the document to distribute with your game or use digital copies to email or upload to a website associated with the game.
