How to Rate Burglar Alarm Systems

Burglar alarm hook-ups have become almost as common as cable and with good reason. People are becoming more security-conscious of what they stand to lose. System installation has become more affordable, too. However, the types of devices and detectors that are available have grown. Subsequently, it is wise to first check around for a system tailored to your specific needs. There are several companies to choose from, so it is best to have a working knowledge of alarms before one is installed in your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Know your alarm detectors and devices. This can be helpful when discussing features with a security consultant, such as how a motion detector works, or how keypads are used to arm and disarm a system. Other detection devices include glass break sensors, smoke detectors or pet-friendly detectors if you have animals in the home. Consider other options such as wireless panic, low temperature, remote arming and driveway alarms.

    • 2

Compare alarm system designs and prices. Select the type of device to be used, and where its sensors and master control panel will be located. Weigh the advantages/disadvantages of wireless versus hard-wired systems. Make certain the design you choose meets your needs since sometimes systems cannot be easily upgraded. Ask the security consultant questions such as how much time would you have to turn off your alarm once you or an authorized individual has entered through a delay door?

    • 3

Ask about alarm system monitoring. Be sure it is 24/7 and that the central station is UL-listed. Find out where the monitoring station is located. Check out the different monthly fees. Before you sign a monitoring agreement, verify its length of coverage. Inquire about the average alarm response time from local police and fire departments as well as fines that could be issued based on the number of false alarms.

Review different alarm companies by getting at least three quotes before you sign anything and never get talked into an agreement on the spot. Compare each proposal and weigh the benefits of each. Ask about warranties and references. Ask how long an installation should take. Check out each alarm company with the Better Business Bureau.

Consider alarm systems you can install yourself. These are generally wireless and are easy to install. However, be aware that such systems are not generally monitored.
