How To Shred Floppy Discs

Shredding floppy disks helps protect your privacy. An ordinary paper/CD shredder won't suffice because of the metal disk in the center. Shredders that can handle the whole floppy disk---metal casing and all---start at around $800. However, you can save money on such hardware with simple, do-it-yourself steps.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Bend the disk to open up the seam between the two hard-plastic sides of the disk.

    • 2

Insert a finger into the seam to spread the two sides apart.

    • 3

Pull out the circular floppy disk inside.

    • 4

Cut the floppy part off of the metal center disk with ordinary scissors and shred the floppy part in a normal electric paper shredder. Merely cutting it in half with scissors is not sufficient protection.

    • 5

      Recycle the two hard-plastic sides.

Tips & Warnings

  • Using a paper shredder that shreds both lengthwise and crosswise is preferable to shredding just lengthwise. Such shredders make it tough to rearrange the pieces.
