Instructions

    • 1

Choose a location to create the salad bar. You can use a kitchen bar, a long kitchen table or consider placing several tables together and draping them with the same tablecloth.

    • 2

Decorate the salad bar. Add items that will accent your party. Try adding centerpieces between salad bar containers, decorate the table with streamers or place flower arrangements on the ends of the salad bar. If decorated well, the appearance of the salad bar will attract your guests.

    • 3

Set out large metal bowls filled with ice. You will need a way to keep the food cold. Each container of lettuce, vegetables, fruit, cheese and dressing will need an ice container. This will prevent the food from wilting and it will preserve the food to last for several hours without spoiling.

    • 4

Shred lettuce for the beginning of your salad bar. Common lettuce used in salads include iceberg lettuce, romaine and spinach. Place the lettuce in a large bowl, but do not set too much out at one time. Leave the lettuce in the refrigerator until it's time to eat to prevent it from wilting.

    • 5

Lay out a variety of vegetables. Prepare your vegetables the night before to save yourself time. Include tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, mushrooms, peppers and radishes. You will need to choose at least 5 different vegetables.

    • 6

Place the fruit after your vegetables. Try mixing up the fruit variety by adding different colors and textures. Fruits such as pineapples, grapes, raisins and strawberries will add color to your salad bar. You can add all of the fruit into one bowl to save space at your salad bar.

    • 7

Add the salad embellishments at the end of your salad bar. People like to top their salads with nuts, seeds, cheese and crackers. Place these items in smaller containers off to the side. Do not forget to add dry seasonings such as salt, pepper and Parmesan with your embellishments.

    • 8

Place the dressings at the end of your salad bar. Instead of placing bottle of dressings out, try pouring the dressing into bowls with ladles. This will allow people to pour the dressing over their salads easily, and it makes the salad bar more presentable. You will also need a variety of dressings available, such as fat-free dressings, oil and vinegar and flavor-rich dressings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Continue to check on the ice. You may need to add ice to the containers, and empty the melted water out into the sink during the party to ensure that the food stays cold.

  • Consider adding meat choices to your salad bar such as chicken, ham and turkey. You will need to place these items next to the lettuce when setting up your salad bar.
