How to Lace U.S. Army Gaiters
A gaiter is a piece of protective gear that covers the leg and ankle to protect that area from injury. During the 1930's the Army issued a white dress version of standard issue gaiters for parades. Leather or canvass gaiters made up the standard uniform issue during World War I and II. Today, reenactors obtain gaiters to complete the traditional uniform. According to the Military History Center, there is a standard army technique for lacing gaiters.

Fold the gaiter lace in half. Use the center as the beginning point for lacing the gaiter.

Insert the two points of the lace into the lowest eyelet holes on each side of the gaiter. Pull the lace up from the inside to the outside of the gaiter. Keep the lace even on both sides of the gaiter.

Run the laces straight up either side of the outside of the gaiter to the next eyelet holes. Insert the two points into the eyelets.

Cross the lace on the inside of the gaiter. Pull the lace through the next eyelet hole from the inside to the outside. Keep the lacing loose.

Run the lace straight up to the next eyelet hole. Repeat these steps, alternating between running straight up on the outside or crossing over on the inside of the gaiter, until both ends reach the top eyelets.

Pull the gaiter on over the foot until it rests on the top of the boot. Run the sole strap under the boot and snap or buckle it tightly.

Tighten the laces, starting at the bottom eyelets. Tighten each section of eyelets as you work up the gaiter until you reach the top of the gaiter.

Tie the gaiter lace in a double bow knot. Tuck the extra lace and bow down inside the gaiter. Do not allow the lace to flop outside the gaiter.
