How to Inject Insulin Using a Levemir Pen
Levemir is a pre-filled insulin pen, prescribed by a physician, that is easy to self-administer. The type of insulin found in the Levemir pen is long-acting and may be used in conjunction with a bolus of insulin to manage type 1 or type 2 diabetes, or it may be used alone. The Levemir pen is a called a "flexpen" and uses Novofine disposable needles, according to the manufacturer. Insulin injections must be administered per a physician's instructions.

Store the Levemir pen unopened in the refrigerator until use. Open pens may be used at room temperature for up to 42 days, according to the manufacturer.

Wash hands with soap and water before beginning.

Remove the cap from the pen and wipe the rubber stopped with an alcohol pad.

Remove the tab from the needle cartridge and screw the needle onto the pen. Remove the outer cap and inner cap from the needle.

Set the unit measure and hold the pen with the needle in the air. Tap the side of the pen to move bubbles to the needle, and press the push button. Repeat until a drop of insulin has appeared on the needle.

Set the dose using the unit measure to the dosage prescribed by your physician. The unit measure may be turned backwards and forwards to reach the accurate dose in the window.

Pinch the desired injection site and insert the needle into the skin. Press the push button to inject the medication and allow six seconds to pass before removing the needle.

Remove and dispose of the needle. Replace the cap and store the pen for future use.

Tips & Warnings
If step five must be repeated six times to get a drop of insulin to appear on the needle, do not use the insulin pen and contact the manufacturer via the contract information on the box.
