How to Correct Registry Errors

For unknown reasons, many programs that make changes to the Windows registry upon installation fail to set the registry back to its original configuration when uninstalled. In time, the registry begins to grow larger, full of entries referencing files or file types that no longer exist. Correct the errors in your registry using a free program such as Free Window Registry Repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install Free Window Registry Repair using the link in the "Resources" section of this article. Launch the program after it is installed.

    • 2

Click the "Options" button, then put a check in the box labeled "Create a system restore point before repairing errors." This step is not required, but creating a system restore point before making a change to the registry is highly recommended. Click "OK."

    • 3

Click the "Full Scan" button. This process will scan the entire registry for errors, which may take several minutes on some computers. A partial registry scan option is available but not recommended.

    • 4

Scan the list of results to determine whether there are any registry keys that you don't want fixed. Generally, you should fix every error found, which is the setting to which Free Window Registry Repair defaults.

    • 5

      Click "Fix Errors".

    • 6

Click "Full Scan" again to confirm that there are no registry errors remaining. If there are still errors in the registry, continue the cycle of scanning and fixing until you fix all errors.
