How to Replace Screw With Pop Rivet
Replacing a screw with a pop rivet generally requires you to increase the size of the hole that held the screw. If you attempt to place a pop rivet directly in the screw hole, the pop rivet will not fit properly. It will usually fit loose and although the pop rivet may grab in the hole, it will not provide its full holding strength. Stepping up the size of the hole to accept a larger pop rivet will ensure that the installed rivet will have an equal or greater holding strength than the removed screw.
Things You'll Need
- Safety glasses
- Screw tip adapter set
- Drill motor
- Pop rivets
- Drill bit set
- Pop rivet gun
Instructions
-
-
1
Put on your safety glasses and select a screw tip adapter that matches the screw you need to remove.
-
2
Insert the screw tip adapter into the chuck of the drill motor and tighten the drill's chuck to hold the adapter securely.
-
-
3
Remove the screw from the material.
-
4
Select a pop rivet and place it into the hole left by the screw. Continue inserting different-sized pop rivets into the hole until you reach a size slightly larger than the screw hole.
-
5
Exchange the screw tip adapter with a drill bit sized to match the pop rivet.
-
6
Place the tip of the drill bit into the screw hole, depress the trigger of the drill motor and drill the larger hole through the screw hole.
-
7
Insert the pop rivet into the pop rivet gun.
-
8
Slide the pop rivet into the enlarged screw hole and apply pressure with the pop rivet gun toward the surface of the material. Make sure that the pieces you are holding in place with the pop rivet fit tightly together.
-
9
Squeeze the handle of the pop rivet gun repeatedly until the pin of the pop rivet snaps free of the rivet head.
-
10
Fully open the pop rivet tool's forward handle and flip the tool over to eject the pin from the jaws of the pop rivet gun.
