How to Hook Up Computer Speakers to Laptop

Laptops come with internal speakers, but they usually aren't powerful enough to fill a room with sound. If you need something louder, you'll need external speakers. As long as the laptop has a headphone jack, installing external speakers is an easy process that will enhance sound quality as well as volume.

Turn on your speakers and try playing a sound or video file from your laptop. Gradually increase the volume of your speakers if there is a separate controller or knob on the speaker itself. You can also adjust your laptop's audio setting by double-clicking on the speaker icon that is found at the system tray located at the bottom right part of your screen. If the speaker icon is not visible, click the arrow to expand the tray.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the speakers have been plugged in but do not produce any sound, there could be a faulty speaker connection or settings. Tighten all the cables of the speakers. Click on the sound icon on the system tray (at the bottom right of the screen) and adjust the sound settings. Make sure that the "Mute" option is not selected. If after these steps the speakers still do not produce any sound, the problem could be a corrupted audio driver or the computer speakers could be defective. Reinstall the audio driver or consider replacing your speakers.

  • Set the volume control of the player to zero before you connect speakers or headphones to your laptop. Also set the volume of the speaker itself to zero if it has a separate volume adjuster connecting it to the laptop. You could damage the audio input of your laptop computer if the speaker volume is set too high.
