How to Find a Lost Parakeet

Losing a pet can be just as tragic as losing a friend or loved one, and the first thing the pet owner wants to do is to find her missing companion. Parakeets, as well as other birds, are notorious for escaping through faulty cage doors and other openings. Taking precautions to prevent losing your parakeet, such as clipping his wings, is the best thing to do. However, if your bird escapes, there are steps you can take to locate him.

Things You'll Need

Print out a photo of your missing parakeet. Use a digital image or scan in a hard-copy photograph. Make the photo take up no more than half of the actual piece of printer paper. Color copies of the photo will make it easier for people to identify your bird. Use a text editor on your computer to add details on how to contact you if your parakeet is found. These details can go on the bottom half of the printer paper sheet.

Place your new flier around your neighborhood on telephone poles and local bulletin boards that can be found at grocery stores and gas stations. Make sure to ask business owners permission before posting your bulletin.

    • 3

Take advantage of the Internet and social networking sites such as Myspace, Facebook and Twitter and post information about your missing parakeet to friends who live nearby. You can also visit websites like America's Database of Lost and Found pets, or Lostfoundpets.us, to post your details and photos of your missing parakeet.

    • 4

Contact your local animal control officer or animal shelter to see if they have captured any loose parakeets.

    • 5

Leave your door open for a few hours a day if possible to see if the bird will come back in on its own. Oftentimes, pet birds like parakeets don't fly too far from home and have been known to return on their own.
