How to Aim Headlamps

A correct headlamp alignment creates safe driving conditions for you and other drivers. If your vehicle's headlamps are out of horizontal alignment, you will either not be able to see the painted lane lines, or you will be able to see into the lane outside of the lane you are driving in. If your vertical alignment is off, other drivers may think your brights are on, or you will not be able to see very far ahead of your vehicle. This project can be accomplished by anyone with a screwdriver and a level parking surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the vehicle on a level surface (all four wheels must be on a level surface) and make sure the tires are fully inflated. The vehicle must not be encumbered by snow, ice or mud. The front end of the vehicle must be fully intact and in good repair. If the front end is damaged, the headlamps may not align correctly. The vehicle should not be weighted down by any cargo except for a full tank of fuel and a driver in the driver's seat.

    • 2

Rock the vehicle to stabilize the suspension. Open the engine compartment to expose the upper portion of the headlamp fixtures.

    • 3

Turn the horizontal adjustment screw with a screwdriver until the indicator lines up with zero. This screw is behind the headlamp fixture toward the side of the vehicle, may be made of either plastic or metal, and may either have a star-shaped head or a hex-shaped head.

    • 4

Turn the vertical adjustment screw with a screwdriver until the leveling bubble lines up with zero. This screw is behind the headlamp fixture toward the middle of the vehicle.
