Instructions

    • 1

Choose the studs for the leather item. There are many types and styles of studs.

Studs that have prongs on the bottom are generally used for leather clothing items.

Studs with screws are best for thicker products like handbags and shoulder bags.

You'll find tons of shapes, sizes and colors of studs at crafts supply stores or online.

    • 2

After purchasing studs, think about the design you'd like to create. Are you using two types of studs to make a pattern? What will you emphasize in your clothing with your design? Use fashion magazines or blogs to gain inspiration for your project.

    • 3

Once you know where you'll be placing the studs, push the stud against the leather where the stud needs to be placed. This will create an impression and mark where the stud holes will go.

    • 4

Make a hole with a sharp object in the impression you made. Use a sharp object that is a little bit smaller than the prong of the stud to assure that the holes for the prongs aren't too big.

If you are using a screw-type stud for a handbag, use a leather punch to make a hole, but be careful -- these tools may stretch your leather.

    • 5

Now that you've added holes in the impressions where the stud will be place, push the stud through the hole.

If the stud has prongs, push them firmly against the leather and bend the prongs over with pliers. Use a thimble to push the prongs firmly against the leather. You do not want them to stick up at all because they may scratch you or snag other clothing you will be wearing.

If the stud is a screw-type, screw the bottom part on, as a nut would be screwed onto a bolt.

    • 6

Continue these steps for each stud until you have the desired effect on your leather item. When you are done, be proud of your new, stylish DIY piece and rock it with confidence.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sharp objects like a metal dart (as recommended by StudsandSpikes.com), which you can use to make holes for studded prongs, should be used with caution. You do not want to hurt yourself or damage your clothing. Leather punches can be purchased at a crafts supply store or online.
