How to Use the 4WD in a Honda Pilot

The four-wheel-drive system in your Honda Pilot is useful for driving off-road or in inclement weather. Honda labels this system as the VTM-4, or Variable Torque Management 4WD system. The VTM-4 system transfers power to each of the rear wheels to help stabilize the vehicle's traction system. The system is easily engaged via a button on the dashboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Bring your Honda Pilot to a full and complete stop. The system will not properly engage if the vehicle is moving.

    • 2

Shift the vehicle into first gear, second gear, or reverse before engaging the 4-wheel-drive system. The system is limited based on the speed of the vehicle, and these gears are within the speed range of the system's capabilities.

    • 3

Engage the VTM-4 system by pressing the VTM-4 Lock button on your Pilot's dashboard. The button will illuminate to confirm that the system is engaged.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not allow your front tires to spin for an extended period of time. This can result in severe transmission damage.

  • Using the 4-wheel-drive system on dry pavement can cause binding of the gears in the rear differential, resulting in damage to the differential.
