How to Make a Master Schedule for Schools

A school's master schedule is the backbone of a successful school year. Class sizes, teacher effectiveness and student learning are all significantly impacted by a master schedule. Successful master schedules allow for elective choices and increased student communication with teachers. Poor master schedules yield staff complaints and poor test scores.

Instructions

    • 1

Communicate with your school's principal to determine your state's credit requirements and the staff and student population for the following school year.

    • 2

Register all of your students for regular and elective classes. Ask students to rank elective classes based on their interest in taking the courses, and group students in required classes based on teacher input.

    • 3

Place students in appropriate grade-level classes based on their achievement groupings and the state requirements first, until you have reached your seating limits as listed on school's student information and registration program.

    • 4

Place students in their elective classes based on their interest rankings until each class is full.

    • 5

Speak with your principal if there are non-placed students and ask him to allow temporary overrides in your registration program for limits in classroom size. Place extra students in required classes.
