Instructions

    • 1

Add potting soil to the jiffy pots. Place the pots in seed flats. Purchase seed flats that come with humidity dome, this turns the flats into mini greenhouses. Sow seeds directly into the soil. Water the pots and potting soil. Do not soak the pots, they should be damp to the touch but not dripping wet.

    • 2

Close humidity domes and place seed flats in a warm location. The top of a refrigerator produces enough heat to act as a heating mat. This will encourage seed germination. Move seed flats to a sunny location once the seeds have sprouted. Remove humidity dome once seedlings are 2 inches tall. This will encourage them to mature and produce true leaves.

    • 3

Prepare garden bed by adding any soil amendments, raking, smoothing and digging holes for transplanting seedlings. Jiffy pots help to limit transplant shock, having the garden bed prepared ahead of time also limits shock.

    • 4

Transplant seedlings after four to six weeks, seedlings are strong enough to place in an outdoor garden. Do not remove the jiffy pot, plant the seedling and jiffy pot together in the ground. They are biodegradable and will add further nutrients to the soil as they decompose.
