Create a keen cutting edge without overheating the cutting edge. This is the most common situation experienced by novices when mastering the art of sharpening tools of any kind. It is especially serious of the woodturning tool is made of carbon tool steel, rather than high-speed steel.
-
2
Wear away the steel on the cutting edge of the Skew Chisel to form a fine cutting edge. A turning chisel honed to perfection slices effortlessly through any wood stock at it is turning on the lathe.

3
Square the cutting edge of the Skew Chisel, by grinding the bevel. Once the bevel is squared, use a coarse Washita grinding stone to flatten the back of the cutting edge. This will remove any scratched or nicked cutting edges from the chisel. Flatten the blade of the Skew Chisel using a lapping compound on a lapping plate.

4
Remove the roughness of the bevel using a medium Arkansas stone. Hand sharpening the Skew wood turning Chisel, produce the best results for removing the roughness on the bevel. The goal is to establish a fine edge on the back of the wood turning chisel blade.
-
5
Flip over the Skew Chisel and use a series of finer stones. Start with a hard Arkansas stone, then move on to a Japanese finishing stone. This process will remove all the scratches on the bevel caused by the grinding and sharpening processes. Use a leather strop covered with fine buffing compounds to polish a razor-sharp cutting edge to the Skewed Chisel.

Tips & Warnings
A simple solution to tip or edge burning is to use tool sharpening equipment that does not generate high heat or sharpening equipment, which is continually cooling the tip or cutting edge.
A woodturning tool made of carbon steel, which is overheated, turns blue, and removes the temper or hardness, causes the woodturning tool to become soft and not hold a cutting edge.
