How to Keep Birds Away From the Hummingbird Feeder

Drawing in colorful hummingbirds is a delight for bird watchers. Setting up feeders is easy, but sometimes the feeder you use might draw in larger, unwanted birds. These could frighten the hummingbirds away. You can do a number of things to deter larger birds from visiting your hummingbird feeders.

• Pan feeder
• Large nectar feeder

Instructions

1. Invest in a pan feeder, which is less likely to drip nectar and will discourage all manner of pests, including larger birds.

2. Feed the other birds regularly. Keep their feeders full so they don't start searching for other sources of nourishment.

3. Hang a nectar feeder for large birds. If they have their own nectar supply, they will be more likely to leave the hummingbird feeder alone.

4. Shorten the perches where you hang your feeders to prevent larger birds from taking advantage of the nectar. The disadvantage to this is that you will invite insects and ants into the feeder.

5. Move your hummingbird feeders away from your other bird feeders to lessen the attraction.
