How to Dress Like a Little Match Girl
The little match girl is a character from the Hans Christian Andersen story of the same name. In the story, she brings delight to all who see her, whether during the Christmas season or any time of the year. The little match girl uses the matches she is trying to sell for money to shed some light on the true meaning of the holiday season. It's easy to dress up like a little match girl with a few simple pieces.

1
Choose a tattered dress to wear. You can use a Victorian-style peasant dress that ties in the back. A dress of this sort should be black or brown and not have any sort of print on the fabric.
If you do not have a Victorian-style dress, any regular dress will do, as long as it is worn and tattered. You can even add some patches to the dress to make it appear more worn out.

2
Wear a full, tattered apron or a shawl over the dress. If you choose to wear a shawl, pull it over your head like a hood.

3
Wear a mop hat on the head if you decide not to wear a shawl. Hold a basket, and make sure that there is a book of matches in the basket.

Tips & Warnings
Do not wear shoes with the costume, as the little match girl was barefoot during most of the story. If you must wear shoes, choose ballet slippers without socks.
If having matches are a safety concern, you can place matches that have already been burned in the basket. Do not let your young child carry regular matches.
