How to Paint a Faux Marble Finish on Concrete or Cement Floor

Painting cement or concrete in a marble pattern is cost-effective but time-consuming. It provides a classy look at a fraction of the price of using actual marble. The project is taxing even for an experienced artist; practice your marble painting on canvas or paper beforehand. Use samples of marble or pictures to influence your work.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the concrete or cement free of debris. Clean it with a sponge, water and soap. Wait until it dries. Check to see whether there is any debris left before painting.

    • 2

Paint latex primer onto the concrete or cement. Paint even, thin layers; this may take multiple coats. Paint thin coats of primer on until there is a solid coating.

    • 3

Choose a color scheme for your marble painting off a sample of actual marble. Apply broad and separated swatches of your darkest hue. Paint lighter-toned veins of marble connecting the broad swatches of dark paint. Paint thin white veins perpendicular to the lighter-toned veins, which creates a type of spider-vein design. Apply varnish to seal in the paint.

Tips & Warnings

  • Base you painting off a sample of marble. There are many shades and designs; know what you want before you begin painting.

  • Depending on the look of the marble, you may need to sponge on the paint in some areas to acquire the effect you want.

  • Always prime in a ventilated area or outside. If you open the doors and windows and have fans blowing and that still isn't enough, wear a respirator or a mask.
