How to Make Your Own Pet Water Fountain
Pets--and cats in particular--appreciate fresh running water. Making a filtered pet water fountain is an ideal way to guarantee a supply of fresh water for your cat when you're away for a weekend. A pet-friendly water fountain also encourages your pet to drink more water--often an issue with older cats, who are prone to partial kidney failure and need to drink lots of water. Keep it simple with just a bowl and filter, so you can easily take your fountain apart for cleaning.
Things You'll Need
- Stainless steel bowl, 2 to 10 quart capacity, depending on your needs
- Aquarium filter, as "silent" as you can find

Tips & Warnings
Any sturdy bowl (glass, ceramic, etc.) will work if it has a strong rim and is deep enough for attachment of the filter, but stainless steel is unbreakable and easy to run through the dishwasher for thorough cleaning.
If your aquarium filter requires replacement of filter pads or cartridges, replace them as needed.
Check water levels frequently, to make sure there's plenty of water for your pet and to avoid damaging the filter motor.
